Rhetoricon - GoFigure
From January - May 2021 I worked with an organization within the University of Waterloo known as The Rhetoricon.
The Rhetoricon research group was created to explore the ways in which rhetorical figures are used in all types of literature
and languages to develop theories and truths about the way the human mind works. My role as a Web Developer was to plan and create
a web-based game known as GoFigure.
The GoFigure game is a citizen science-based game focused on gathering real data about
rhetorical figures through gameplay. The core functions of the game include scouting an instance,
marking the instance, and getting a moderator to review the instance. In other words, players would find real world instances
of rhetorical figures in books, news articles or any form of literature and then copy them into the game and highlight which
components of the text resemble a certain rhetorical figure.
Throughout my 4 months, I worked on both the front and backend design of the game including creating APIs to retrieve the data
inputted by a user and store it within the game's database, and creating interactive pages for the users to be able to play the
game. More specifically, I worked on the login/registration page, a scouting page (inputting some text), a marking page (highlighting
the inputted text) and a moderation page (approving or denying the marked text). Unfortunately, since the game was still under
heavy development during my time as a co-op no demos or images could be shown here.
For a much more detailed description of my work, you can read about it here in my report.
